The Top 10 Most Outrageous MTV VMAs Moments Of All-Time
2018 MTV Video Music Awards tonight includes political and social music video nominations
The MTV Video Music Awards are Monday in New York City at Radio City Music Hall, and Cardi B leads the nominations with 10 nods. Jennifer Lopez will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and one video will walk away with the Moonman for Video With a Message.
The category is relatively new and has been won by videos including Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" in 2011, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Same Love" featuring Mary Lambert in 2013, and Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts" in 2014.
Last year, days after the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Susan Bro, the mother of counter-protester Heather Heyer who was killed at the rally, presented the category, then called "Best Fight Against The System."
LAST YEAR'S AWARDS: Calls to suicide prevention hotline spike
Director Andy Hines, a past winner who's up for the award again this year, called Video With a Message, "the only VMA that's worth, in my opinion, being nominated for." Here's a preview of the videos up the award in 2018:
"This Is America" - Childish Gambino
"This Is America" was an immediate sensation, racking up more than 80 million YouTube views in a week, rocketing to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and inspiring articles, Twitter threads, and conversations about its meaning. The video was directed by Hiro Murai, who's worked with Donald Glover on other projects including the FX series "Atlanta." Murai told Vanity Fair that Glover pitched him on a video that showed him shooting a man and a church choir, and it grew from there. "Those were the two things he pitched me, and from that, and from the way he was kind of miming the dance moves, we abstractly started bouncing the ball back and forth," Murai said. Glover said Murai handled the "tricky" concept well. "Hiro's really good about restraint," he said.
The MTV VMAs have seen some things. Crazy things. Like Kanye West infamously interrupting Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech and Miley Cyrus grinding on Robin Thicke crazy. Relive the most outrageous moments!
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards were nearly a decade ago, but we can all recall one of the moments with perfect clarity. I was only 14 at the time; just a high school freshman watching the show on a school night in mid-September. And yet, I can vividly remember witnessing Kanye West approach the stage, nab the microphone out of 19-year-old Taylor Swift‘s hand during her Best Female Video acceptance speech for “You Belong With Me,” and tell her, “Imma let you finish,” before announcing that Beyonce‘s “Single Ladies” had one of the best videos of all time.
All. Time. And now here we are writing about the wildest VMAs moments of all-time and Kanye made the list. He’d probably be proud of that.

It’s that time of year again when MTV celebrates the short-form genre that put it on the map. Music videos may be the domain of YouTube nowadays, but guys, MTV has been doing this for a long time!
Tonight, the annual MTV Video Music Awards will return to New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the venue that first hosted the event in 1984. (The awards took place in Los Angeles last year.) The telecast is set to begin tonight (Monday, August 20) at 9 p.m. ET with an opening performance from Cardi B. A pre-show is slated to begin at 8 p.m. ET. Weirdly, MTV has kept the host secret.
Cardi B leads the list of nominees with 10, including Video of the Year for her collaboration with Bruno Mars on “Finesse.” The Carters (aka, Beyoncé and Jay-Z) have eight nominations, while Childish Gambino and Drake each have seven. Pitchfork has the full list here.
